Skin Peels

Skin Peels

A skin peel involves the application of a gentle chemical solution typically consisting of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) to the outermost layer of the skin. Exfoliation of the dead skin cells helps to fade pigmented areas, promote cell turnover, and reveal a smoother and brighter complexion. The Dermatology Institute of Victoria uses medical grade skin peels, available in different strengths that range from light skin peels to medium depth peels.

  • Multiple Varieties of Peel Solutions for Specific Skin Concerns: The selection of specific chemical agents, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or trichloroacetic acid (TCA), is crucial in determining the peel's depth and target skin concerns. The concentration of these agents also plays a role in the peel's effectiveness, with higher concentrations generally leading to more significant results.

Customized Treatment Duration: The contact time of the peel solution on the skin determines the extent of exfoliation. The duration may vary based on the peel's strength and the patient's skin type and sensitivity.

Customized Treatment Plans: The effectiveness of a chemical peel is influenced by the patient's skin type, concerns, and specific goals. The choice of peel must align with the individual's skin needs to achieve the desired outcomes.

  • The patient’s skin will be thoroughly cleansed and a skin prep solution may be applied. The peel itself is then painted on in layers and left to develop, it is then either washed off in the clinic or left on to wear home.

During the contact time, the patient may experience a mild tingling or warming sensation on the skin, which is normal and expected. The intensity of the sensation may vary based on the peel's strength and individual skin sensitivity.

  • Expectations & Downtime:

It is common to feel a mild stinging sensation for a few minutes following application and the skin may turn red.

•The area may feel tight after treatment, but the patient can apply a suitable moisturiser as frequently as required.

    • The patient may experience a light exfoliation or peel more intensely.

    • Most side effects usually settle by day five after treatment. Application of sunscreen is important.
